Diesel is a type of fuel derived from crude oil, primarily used in diesel engines. It is a heavier, more energy-dense fuel compared to gasoline and is commonly used in various transportation and industrial applications, including trucks, buses, trains, ships, and generators. Diesel fuel is known for its high efficiency and torque, making it ideal for powering larger vehicles and heavy machinery.

Diesel engines operate by compressing the air in the combustion chamber, causing it to heat up. When diesel fuel is injected into the chamber, it ignites due to the high temperature, driving the engine. This process results in better fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions per unit of energy, but can produce higher levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter, making emission control technologies essential.

Diesel fuel is classified into various grades, with diesel #2 being the most commonly used for standard applications, while diesel #1 is used in colder climates due to its lower viscosity. Diesel can also be blended with biofuels to create biodiesel, which is a more environmentally friendly alternative.
